f you didn’t catch the recent article from the New York Times/International Herald Tribune titled “A Patchwork of Financing Complicates Foreign Study” then it’s worth having a read (see here) as the article not only talks about the challenges of getting a loan for study abroad, it also talks about a proposal that has been tables in Brussels whereby the European Union would have a EU-wide student loan program that would allow for portable student loans.

IE Business School does offer loans to international students, in amounts of up to 30.000€ towards master degrees.  Rates are in the neighbourhood of 4% and repayment periods of up to 10 years.  Students have up to 24 months of grace period, and some IE’s loan partners charge no penalty for early repayment.  The big plus with IE’s loan programs however are that students only have to deal with the Financial Aid Department, and the Financial Aid Department works with the banks to process the loans.  While students do have to have a good credit history and strong future earnings potential, the banks that IE works with provide loans to Spanish and international students alike.  For more information on IE’s loan programs, see here.

Check out the recent article published by BGS in their BZine magazine here.

This year IE and BGS are continuing their commitment to BGS members via scholarship program that helps reduce the financial commitment needed to complete a top master degree at an internationally acclaimed school in Europe.

A graduate degree – something which 77% of BGS undergraduates plan on pursuing according to survey research done this summer at the BGS’s Central Office – is a lifetime investment in personal and professional development that will prove essential to success in today’s increasingly global and complex economic market.

To help admitted students better understand how to navigate the IE Financial Aid web page, we’ve provided some useful tips that should be reviewed before starting your search for scholarship, IE Fellow and loan options.

Tips for Bachelor Degree Students

When you navigate to the Financial Aid web page at www.ie.edu/financialaid you’ll be directed to a landing page which is the same for both master and undergraduate programs.  Here you can either click on the link that says “More Info”, which appears under the image for Bachelor Degrees, or alternatively, you can use the blue navigation tabs on the upper left hand side of the page that also say “Bachelor Degrees”.  In either case, you will be redirected to the undergraduate programs-specific Financial Aid web page.  Here you can look for scholarship options available to IE students admitted to an IE University program.

Search for scholarships is easy at this point: all you need to do is select your program from the pick list, then select your geographic region from a second picklist, and then click on “Search”.  The “Sponsor” cell does not need to be changed, unless you are looking for either an IE Foundation or an outside organization scholarship specifically.  When the results list pops up, you should read through the list to see which scholarships you best qualify for.  Please also note that there are some scholarships that show up automatically when you first click on the “Scholarships” button – these scholarships should be considered “featured scholarships”, and not scholarships for any specific program.

Tips for Master Program Students

When you navigate to the Financial Aid web page at www.ie.edu/financialaid you’ll be directed to a landing page which is the same for both master and undergraduate programs.  Here you can either click on the link that says “More Info”, which appears under the image for Master Programs, or alternatively, you can use the blue navigation tabs on the upper left hand side of the page that also say “Master Programs”.  In either case, you will be redirected to the master programs-specific Financial Aid web page.  Here you can look for scholarship, fellowship and loan options avaibable to IE students.

The next step is to decide whether you want to search for scholarship and fellowship options, or whether you want to review different loan/financing options that may be available to you.  Here you need to click on either “Scholarships” or “Loans”.  Currently, we list fellowships under the scholarships category however we are working on developing a dedicated section for fellowships which will be available in the second quarter of 2009.

If you wish to search for loan options, then instead of clicking on the “Scholarship” button as above, click on the “Loan” button.  When you do so you will be redirected to the loan search tool.  Again, here you will need to select your program from the pick list, then select your geographic region from a second picklist, and then click on “Search”.  When the results list pops up, you should read through the list to see which loan programs you may qualify for, and then apply directly to each individual organization/institution.
